 Northern Highlight

Cally Johnson-Isaacs

Where are you based, and how would you sum up the place in three words?

North Northumberland: inspiring, invigorating, coastal.

What is special to you about illustrating children's books, and what is your favourite thing about it?

Being a children’s book illustrator is a dream come true. It’s a privilege to turn words into visuals and to plant seeds of imagination that will grow for a lifetime. It’s so special to be part of a child’s journey of discovery through the magic of illustration and to know that my artwork might contribute to cherished childhood memories in the same way picture books and story time with my dad meant so much to me. It always amazes me to think of children enjoying my pictures with their families around the world.

Tell us about the most recent book you've worked on.

My next book, The Best You, will be published in January 2024 by Little Tiger. It’s an inspirational and thought-provoking book written by parenting coach Nima Patel. It celebrates the qualities children need to thrive. I had a lot of fun creating the characters.

If you could be transported to anywhere in the North/Scotland right now, where would it be?

After a failed attempt earlier this year due to poor weather conditions, it would be great to reach the summit of Ben Nevis! Otherwise, there are so many beautiful places: the Hebrides, the Lake District, the Cheviots, the beach at my doorstep  I’m happiest when feeling free in the great outdoors.

What literary events have you attended or been involved with recently in the North/Scotland?

Alnwick Story Fest, Berwick Literary Festival, and I'm a regular attendee of exhibitions at the brilliant Seven Stories, a member of a Northumberland poetry collective, and a big supporter of the legendary Barter Books.

Macmillan Children's Books, September 2020

Name your favourite children’s book set in the North/Scotland.

I can’t visit the Lake District without thinking of Beatrix Potter’s stories and illustrations. Lovely to think how her talent is still entertaining and inspiring generations of children.

What advice would you give to aspiring publishing professionals living in the North and Scotland?

For aspiring illustrators living in Northern England and Scotland, I would say it’s crucial to focus on developing a unique style. Honing your craft through consistent practice is essential; seek feedback from Northern and Scottish mentors, build an online presence, and engage with local art communities. There are so many wonderful art events and galleries in the North. Be sure to visit Seven Stories, the National Centre for children’s books based in Newcastle Upon Tyne – an amazing place for inspiration. Be patient and, ultimately, don’t give up!

Kane Miller, January 2020

What would you like to see from children's publishing in the North and Scotland?

It would be a lovely thing to have a yearly exhibition in a dedicated gallery. An opportunity for illustrators to create original artwork to help inspire the next generation of creatives and to showcase the wonderful talents of the children’s book world to the local communities of the North and Scotland.

Who are your favourite Northern/Scottish children’s authors?

Ross Collins, Catherine Rayner, Simon Bartram, Helen Stephens, Jenny Bloomfield, Alan Brown.
