Children's Books North 2022 Mentor Scheme

CHILDREN'S BOOKS NORTH 2022 MENTOR SCHEME

We are delighted to announce that the Children's Books North Mentor Scheme is returning for 2022.

It is now two years since we launched Children's Books North, with a key aim of increasing regional diversity in the children’s book industry. The 2021 mentor scheme saw CBN co-founders - Emma, Liz and Tilda - support aspiring publishing professionals Emma Toft, Fatima Shazad and Sarah Nuttall as CBN's first cohort of mentees.

‘The CBN mentor scheme was an invaluable experience for me both professionally and personally. With the help of my mentor, Tilda, I was able to work on and improve my application and interview skills as well as improving my social media presence. She was also a great help in introducing me to different publishing professionals to learn more about specific areas of the industry.’ Emma Toft

‘This mentoring scheme really provided me a deep insight into the world of publishing, especially with the different areas of publishing and the structure of it. My mentor, Liz, was really kind and supported me every step of the way. I really recommend this programme to anyone wanting to get into publishing.’ Fatima Shahzad

'The CBN mentee scheme has been a wonderful opportunity to learn more about publishing from my brilliant and talented mentor, Emma. I've loved my experience and would highly recommend anyone with an interest in publishing to get involved.' Sarah Nuttall

The mentor scheme is returning for 2022, with Emma, Liz and Tilda again mentoring

three aspiring publishing professionals living in the North West, North East, Yorkshire and Scotland.

Mentoring will work on a 1:1 basis.

Applications are open to anyone interested in beginning a career in publishing.

No previous experience is needed.

What is involved?

An introductory 1-hour meeting (face-to-face or via Zoom, Teams, etc.) followed by three 1-hour meetings focused on:

  • Improving your CV & social media profile

  • The importance of networking

  • Interview & assistant role expectations

(In between these four meetings, there will be regular email interaction.)

How long will it last?

The mentorship scheme will last 4 months, starting April 2022.

After the scheme ends, we will put you in contact with the other CBN mentees from your year so that you can create a support network moving forward. Once a year, we will gather all our mentees together (virtually or in-person) for a social gathering.

How to apply?

Applications are open now and will close on Monday 20th Friday 18th February 2022
