Mentor Scheme 2024 - Applications Open

Children's Books North 2024 Mentor Scheme
Applications Open!

Applications are now open for the Children’s Books North Mentor Scheme!

The scheme offers twelve aspiring publishers living in the North West, North East, Yorkshire and Scotland four hours of mentoring with a publishing professional over four months, with the goal of demystifying the industry for new talent.

Mentoring will work on a 1:1 basis and mentees will be matched with a mentor that suits their interests and experience, whether that’s editorial, production, design, marketing, sales or agenting. For more info on publishing roles, see document here for a list of different departments within publishing.

Applications are open to anyone interested in beginning a career in publishing. No previous experience is needed and we also welcome applications from those looking to change career path. The only essential is a love for children’s books and to be based in the North of England or Scotland. Scroll to the ‘How to Apply' section of this page for the link to the application form.

*Please note that the scheme is for aspiring publishers, not writers or illustrators.*

How does the scheme work?

If you are successful, you will be notified within two weeks of the closing date and matched with a mentor.

You will then have an introductory 1-hour online meeting, followed by three 1-hour online meetings focused on:

- Improving your CV and social media profile
- The importance of networking
- Interview and assistant role expectations

In between these four meetings, there will be regular email interaction between you and your mentor, and you will have tasks to complete to prepare for each session.

How long will the mentor scheme last?

The mentorship scheme will last four months, starting May 2024, with one meeting per month, to be arranged at a time to suit both mentor and mentee. Meetings will happen remotely, but if accessible there may be an opportunity for in-person meetings.

You will also get an opportunity to meet the other mentees and start building your publishing network.

How to apply?

Applications are OPEN NOW and will close on Sunday 14th April at midnight.

See document here for a list of different departments within publishing.

Please note we cannot provide feedback on unsuccessful applications.
