Co-founders of Children's Books North

(Tilda Johnson, Emma Layfield, Liz Scott)

Children's Books North was created by Tilda Johnson, Emma Layfield and Liz Scott to connect published children's authors, illustrators and publishing professionals in the North of England and Scotland.

Emma Layfield

Emma has worked in the wonderful world of picture books for over twenty years. In her previous role for Hachette Children's Group, she was the Group Picture Book Publisher overseeing both the Hodder and Orchard imprints.

In January 2020, Emma started in a new role for HCG as Picture Book Development Director, North, based in Manchester. She is responsible for networking, building relationships and looking for business opportunities in the North of England and Scotland, with a focus on acquiring Northern and Scottish picture book talent.

Emma is from Lancashire originally so personally and professionally this move means a lot to her. She is passionate about developing, nurturing and retaining the amazing talent here in the North, and understands the importance of being plugged into what's happening around the whole country.

Liz Scott

Liz is a freelance children’s book publicist, based in Altrincham, with more than twenty years experience in the book industry. From her first industry job as a bookseller at Bradford Waterstones, Liz knew she was in the right place – almost certainly being influenced by the intoxicating smell of books and coffee.

Liz spent seven years in the marketing and publicity department at Usborne Publishing, steering campaigns and promoting books ranging from pre-school to YA before returning to the North and launching Liz Scott PR & Marketing Ltd.

Liz now supports authors and publishers, including Oxford University Press, Usborne Publishing, Old Barn Books and b small publishing. She creates bespoke campaigns and book tours with a focus on connecting networks across the North – while still drinking too much coffee and sniffing books!

Tilda Johnson

Tilda has worked with children's books for over ten years. Before moving up North and working freelance, she was Senior Commissioning Editor for Hot Key Books and Piccadilly Press.

Since then Tilda has set up a Manchester branch of the Golden Egg Academy, running courses for writers of YA and children's fiction. She also offers editorial mentoring as well as working as a freelance editor for a variety of children's publishers.

Tilda grew up abroad and has moved around a lot. She's not from the North but is very much settled here now, loves it, and is passionate about developing industry opportunities outside of London.
